The name "Special Cuvee" was created in 1911. The idea came from William Folks, a great British wine lover who felt it was an insult to simply call this great champagne "non vintage". The suggestion of naming it "Special Cuvee" was immediately approved by the House of Bollinger. Made from a special blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier grapes, the cuvée has a proportion of reserve wines incorporated into the blend to produce the unique house style. Matured in Bollinger's cellars for a minimum of three years, it emerges with a fresh, aromatic, slightly toasted flavour with spicy notes. Delicate bubbles sparkle in the glass enhancing the smooth, lingering aftertaste.
